Ioannis Dakanakis

Solar physics, observational astrophysics

Giannis Dakanalis received his PhD in Astrophysics from the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in 2025, in collaboration with the Institute of Astronomy, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS), of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). He completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Physics of NKUA from which he received his degree in 2016. He then received his Master’s Degree in Physics, with specialization in Astrophysics, from the same department (2017-2019) and during this time he worked as a postgraduate scholar in the project “KRIPIS/PROTEAS II” (NSRF 2014-2020) on the upgrade of NOA’s solar telescope performing systematic observations. During his PHD thesis he studied vortical motions in the solar atmosphere and he has participated in numerous domestic and international scientific conferences (HelAS conf., COSPAR2022, ESPM16) and projects (“PRE-EST-National Participation”, “IKYDA 2020”, “International Exchanges 2022, grants at the Royal Society”), while at the same time he worked in public outreach at NOA’s Visitor Centers and the Kryoneri Observatory, as well as, a science tutor for high-school students. Since June 2024 he works on the design and implementation of public outreach projects and communication of science, astronomy and astrophysics.
