Matteo Barsuglia

Scientific research in a time of climate crisis

Matteo Barsuglia is a CNRS research director at the laboratory AstroParticle and Cosmology.
He is member of the the collective Labo1point5 working on the impact of scientific research on the environment and the climate crisis.

His research focuses on gravitational wave detection and, in particular, the development of interferometric detectors. From 2005 to 2007, he led the team responsible for developing the Virgo detector. From 2008 to 2018 and again since 2025, he has been head of the Virgo team at the APC laboratory and a member of the project steering committee. He is currently a member of the steering committee for the Einstein Telescope project. He was director of the centre Cosmos, Science and Society Centre from 2018 to 2025.
